What is an Individualized Education Program (IEP)?

An Individualized Education Program is a plan developed for public school children who need special education. It is tailored to the student’s needs by setting realistic goals and specifying the services that the school will provide. IEPs in Massachusetts give each child the best possible chance at success.

An IEP is more than just a written plan because it considers the child’s academic, social, and personal growth. It is created by a team that typically includes teachers, school administrators, special education professionals, and the child’s parents or guardians.

This team works together to assess the child’s strengths, identify areas that require support, and develop a tailored strategy for academic success.

Who Needs an IEP?

IEPs are developed for students who have been evaluated and identified with a disability that impacts their ability to learn in a classroom setting. That could include learning disabilities, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), emotional disorders, mental challenges, or physical limitations.

IEP Process in Massachusetts

Navigating the IEP process is often confusing, but our team is here to make it easier. In Massachusetts, the process starts with an evaluation to determine if your child needs special education services. If eligible, we work together to create the IEP.

Referral and Evaluation

The IEP process starts with a referral made by a teacher, parent, or healthcare provider. This is followed by an evaluation that considers your child’s educational, behavioral, and developmental needs to understand where your child needs the most help.

IEP Meeting

This meeting brings together the IEP team, including educators, school administrators, specialists, and the parent or guardian. The team discusses your child’s needs, educational goals, and the required support.

Using the IEP

Once the IEP is finalized, the school uses its directions. That means specialized teaching methods or assistive technology to help your child learn and grow.

Review and Adjustment

The IEP is regularly reviewed. These reviews change the document as your child evolves and grows. Adjustments reflect changes in circumstances, progress made, or new challenges encountered.
